Seizure the Day
Seizure the day
A day of forethought forgone and forgot,
my mind unclear and my heart beating fast
impulses pulling me this way and that
I work to achieve my intended task.
The rain interferes and slows up my day.
Shopping for furniture yields up a chair.
To the grocery store I wend my slow way
and my life seizes buying deli wares.
With errands complete and busy day done
pain begins and motion ceases for now.
I feel as though a long race has been run
my health has become my ultimate tao.
A simple day becomes busy in mind
when health of mind and body both grind.
Pastoral
Pastoral
In Greece there lies a grassy hillside fair
that I climb seeking out some solitude.
I lay on greening slopes and look at where
mediterranean ships dance my mood.
Atop the crest an ancient church crumbles
It behind, I ponder mortality
Approaching Storm precurses with rumbles
rain pressing color on a slate-gray sea.
Heedless of Storm, I sleep in the open.
A chill to the bone awakens my mind
to images of the foibles of men
and foolish aspirations of mankind.
Nature, in the end, provides no meaning
but surrounds the world where we lie dreaming.
Danube
Danube
In greening days when far abroad in life
friends met and measured the bounds of spirit
in weinstube and beer hall laughter rife
with strength of youth and loudly sung lyrics
Those were the days when hubris' trumpet harsh
shouted to all of plans quite grandiose
We'd answer fate - set armies all a-march
not sink in drink to sing our songs morose.
Greatness never into our lives was thrust.
We lived our lives as called by fate to do.
No clarion called all the world to us
nor were we the cause of the nation's rue
Aspirations are no measure of man
nor honestly his deeds nor any plan.
