Suicide is Painless

"Suicide is painless"
in the song, that's what they say
but pain for whom and pain for what
and for how many days?

To leave the world and all the folk
in a painless, easy way
is best for all, a relief I think,
at least that's what I say.

Painless for me is not to be
for I cannot fail to think
of the pain of those I leave behind
and how their souls will shrink

from the quiet sight of a sallow corpse
on the bed or in the tub
and the lasting thought of "Why? Why? Why?
Shakespeare said, "Ay, there's the rub."
