Hoisin Sauce
Sauce
This is a staple in oriental cooking. There are many purchased versions of Hoisin Sauce. I like this one just as well as those. It takes 5 minutes to prepare and stores well for weeks.
Ingredients/Shopping List
- 4 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 20 drops chinese hot sauce
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper.
Directions
Mix ingredients.
OK, those directions were too simple. This is a gooey blob that is hard to mix. Use a fork, not a whisk. Put some muscle in it. Use a deep bowl. Keep at it. It will happen eventually.
Variations:
- Use black bean paste for the peanut butter
- Use molasses or brown sugar instead of honey
- Use habanero or jalepeno instead of the chinese chili sauce. I find habanero works excellently.
- A friend reports success using red wine vinegar instead of white vinegar. I haven't tried that but it sounds plausible
